Let’s talk about Health Benefits of Guava Fruit in detail.



Origin of Guava Fruit:


1. Guava Fruit is a tropical fruit cultivates in Tropical and Sub Tropical regions.


2. Guava Fruit is native to Mexico, Central America, Caribbean and Northern South America.


3. Guava Fruit was adopted as a crop in Tropical and Sub Tropical Asia.


4. Since the middle of 20th century Guava Fruit has been grown commercially in Southwestern Europe and Greece as well.


5. Guava Fruit was introduced to Florida in 19th century.


Geographical conditions for Guava Fruit:

1. Scientific name of Guava Fruit is ‘Psidium Guajava’ and it belongs to ‘Myrtle’ family.


2. Guava Fruit needs low light temperature that is 10˚c or 50˚F during winter.


3. It tolerates high temperature and drought conditions.


4. Annual rainfall of 100cm is sufficient during rainy season.


5. Soil suitable for Guava Fruit is heavy clay to very light sandy soil. pH value of soil should be between 4.5-8.2.


6. Guava Fruit is sensitive to water logging.


7. A fertilizer high in potassium is best for Guava Fruit.


Cultivation of Guava Fruit in India:

1. Guava Fruit is the fourth most grown fruit in India.


2. In India Guava Fruit is grown in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.


3. The area under Guava Fruit is about 0-15 million hectares, producing 1.80 million tonnes of fruit.

How we can grow Guava Fruit at home:

1. Guava plant needs full sunlight. It has very little tolerance for cold.


2. To speed up the germination, soak the seeds in water for 10-15 days or boil them for 5 minutes before sowing.


3. Sow the seeds about 0.5 centimeters below the soil and water.


4. Cover the pot with a plastic wrap to maintain a high humidity.


5. Guava seeds germination takes about 3-10 weeks. Remove plastic wrap from the pot.


6. Transplant the seedlings when they are 4 to 18 inch high.


7. Provide regular water to deep roots but reduce watering during winter.


8. Guava Fruit matures in 2-4 months after the flowers bloom.


Why Guava Fruit is green in Color?

Guava leaves contain phytochemicals like Cartenoids and Polyphenols like Gallocatechin and Leucocyanidin. That’s why they are yellow green in Color.


Pink Guava’s:

Pink Guava’s are most aromatic. Pink Guava’s have naturally occurring organic pigment called Cartenoid.


Types of Guava Trees:

1. Red Malaysian: It produces red fruits and bright pink flowers.


2. Tropical White: It provides sweet fruit with yellow skin and a pleasant aroma.


3. Mexican Cream: It is also known as “Tropical Yellow”. The fruit is very creamy and sweet.


4. Strawberry Guava: It is very sweet in taste. It produces taste like strawberry.


5. Lemon Guava: The fruits are yellow with yellow flesh. The trees grow smaller than other types of Guava trees.


6. Detwiler: This is yellow-fleshed guava. It is large in size with a firm texture.

According to United States Department of Agriculture 100gm of Guava Fruit contains 417mg of Potassium.
